Beta skills are special abilities to deal significantly more damage than other attacks, while also staggering enemies and breaking many attack patterns from even bosses. Beta Skills do require Beta energy that players will build up while in combat; here's how to do it properly.
How to Charge Beta Energy
Beta Energy is the resource needed to use Beta Skills and is displayed on the HUD in the bottom left of the screen right above Eve's Health. Beta Energy is stored in smaller and larger squares, with four smaller boxes making up one large square. Actions in combat such as landing attacks and parrying will build up Beta Energy in the smaller boxes, with the larger squares being used to activate Beta Skills.
Parrying is best at charging Beta Energy, with a perfect parry usually filling up two smaller squares of Beta Energy. Landing attacks against an enemy also charges Beta Energy, but it does require multiple attacks to land to get even a single small square filled. Once stored, Beta energy stays forever until used, but also can't fill beyond Eve's maximum displayed on the HUD, so be sure to use Beta Skills as your energy fills up as excess Beta Energy is just wasted. Some gear pieces increase the amount of Beta Energy earned across the board, along with some that give Beta Energy when Eve loses health.
Upgrading & Using Beta Skills
While only starting the game with two, Eve has multiple Beta Skills at her disposal. Finding a camp and accessing the skill tree will let her use SP to unlock new Beta Skills or purchase upgrades on existing ones. After a Beta Skill is unlocked, it will immediately tie to a corresponding button that can be seen in the bottom right of the screen in-game.
To activate a Beta Skill, hold down the block button with L1 and press the corresponding button displayed in the bottom left with the Beta Skill you want to use. Whether a Beta Skill hits an enemy or not doesn't matter as Beta Energy will still be used, and the skill will activate.
